What are Display Energy Certificates (DECs)?

From 1 October 2008, all buildings over 1,000m2 which are owned by public authorities, or which are frequently visited by the public, will need to clearly display an energy certificate (DEC) for all to see. To comply with this directive, all relevant buildings need to have started collecting energy data as from September 2007, since they need to have a year’s worth of data in place.

What do you need to do?

You need to ensure you have invoices and meter readings for all the energy used by your building, so your carbon emissions can be calculated. You will also need to calculate the usable floor area of your building. Each building affected by this new directive will have to be assessed once a year.
