Market Structure
The Finnish electricity market became fully deregulated in 1998, giving all customers free choice of electricity supplier independent of where in the country they lived. The largest electricity suppliers, Fortum, Vattenfall and Helsingen Energia, have a market share of about 44%. Fortum controls about 40% of the electricity production in Finland. Since the deregulation of the Finnish electricity market more than 66% of industry customers and 30% of private customers have changed suppliers or renegotiated their contracts, but there are still significant price differences in the market. Finnish electricity prices are generally among the very lowest in Europe and Scandinavia. The electricity prices for industrial users are fourth lowest in the EU. The Nordic energy market is one of the most liquid and volatile energy markets in the world. As such there are many opportunities for savings through proactive procurement by taking advantage of the reduced prices available.
