Market Background
-
The electricity market in Hungary has been liberalised for large energy users (with a minimum annual consumption of 6.5 GWh) since January 2003, and for all customers since January 2008.
-
The gas market first opened in January 2004 for all non-residential customers, and then it was fully opened in July 2007 for all consumers.
-
The energy markets are split between the regulated market and the competitive market, with eligible customers able to switch from one to another.
-
It is estimated that the share of electricity supplied in the competitive market is roughly 60%, and even lower for gas.
-
Switching has been limited, and mainly amongst large business and industrial customers. Competition in Hungary's electricity and gas markets is increasing, resulting in further opportunities for organisations to significantly reduce their energy costs.
