Enerkem, a Canadian firm specialising in renewable fuel technology, has begun to build an industrial plant capable of producing 10 million gallons of biofuel per year. The non recyclable waste from municipal landfill sites could provide fuel for 400,000 cars, from 100,000 tonnes of materials.
The plant will be situated in Edmonton, a city which currently sends 40% of its waste to landfill. After the plant is built, this figure will be cut to 10% marking Edmonton as the first North American City to reach this milestone.
The process for extracting the fuel uses carbon residues extracted from the waste, and transformed using heat, pressure and chemicals.
