The Energy and Climate Change Secretary today announced a possible plan to allow councils to generate electricity supplying the National Grid. Councils are currently barred from selling electricity generated from renewable sources, a law dating back to 1976 due to be overturned in August. The change will "allow councils to take a central role in greening the nation", according to The Renewable Energy Association. Geographical location could determine the type of investment, for example coastal Councils may research the viability of wind or wave power, whilst others may consider anaerobic digestion utilising crops from arable farmland, or waste from the food industry. It is hoped that the freedom to generate energy within a Council will encourage more investment, and in turn, funds raised can be fed back into the community.
