Market Structure
Liberal The Swedish electricity market became fully deregulated in 1998, giving Swedish customers free choice of electricity supplier. The largest electricity suppliers, Vattenfall, E.ON and Fortum, have a market share of about 50% on the retail market and they control about 85% of electricity production in Sweden.
Customers who have not switched supplier or renegotiated their supply contract are placed on a “until further” price, which is much higher than both fixed prices the average spot price. Since the deregulation of the Swedish energy market more than 57% of all customers in Sweden have changed supplier at least once. This is a good indication of how competitive the energy market is. The Nordic energy market is one of the most liquid and volatile energy markets in the world. As such there are many opportunities for savings through proactive procurement by taking advantage of the reduced prices available.
