Liberal markets The electricity market opened for all customers in 1997, meaning customers could change power supplier without incurring any charges. Former monopoly Statkraft directly controls 35% of energy production in Norway. Three companies, Hafslund, Fjordkraft and LOS, have a gathered market share of 56% of the retail market. Since the deregulation of the energy market there have been more than 2.3 million changes of supplier. With a total population of 4,8 million that is a significant indicator of how competitive the market is. The Nordic energy market is one of the most liquid and volatile energy markets in the world. As such there are many opportunities for savings through proactive procurement. In 2009 there was a total difference of 33% on fixed price products and 9% on spot price products.
