There is an implicit link between energy prices in Ireland and the supply coming from Great Britain. An understanding of this link is necessary to be able to analyse and anticipate the Electricity and Gas Markets in Ireland.

The Great Britain - Ireland Link

Gas:
  • The Republic of Ireland is dependent upon gas flows from the UK via the Moffat interconnector
  • The SNIP connects Scotland with Northern Ireland.
  • Imports arrive via the Shannon LNG terminal
  • Northern Ireland's gas market is still in its infancy
  • The structure of the gas market in the Republic of Ireland is identical to the UK gas market

   Electricity:
  • Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are united by the Single Electricity Market (SEM)
  • Northern Ireland is connected to Great Britain via the Moyle Interconnector in Scotland
  • Over 50% of power is from gas-fired plants
  • Over 90% of gas is imported
What does this mean?

This link means that to successfully interpret the Irish markets, you need to be an expert in the UK markets, or work with one. Inenco has been effectively interpreting UK market activity since the markets deregulated and have been trading successfully on these markets since 2004.

Our track record illustrated below demonstrates we have beaten the market average price for 5 years out of the past 6 and achieved a 35% improvement on price in 2009. In 2008, we experience the first period of extreme price rises largely as a result of speculation and many businesses panic bought at the peak of this window.

To prevent businesses being exposed to such unpredictable volatility, Inenco introduced the Capped Strategy in 2008 and it has been operating successfully since this time.

Why choose Inenco?

  • Our capped strategy benefit in 2010 was over 6 million euros
  • Every year we manage 1.4 billion euros worth of gas and electricity for high profile clients in every major sector across Europe
  • We can demonstrate consistent delivery of an overall price benefit to clients
  • We were able to deliver a 35% improvement on market average prices in 2009
  • Our clients voted us energy consultant of the year in 2010
