Groningen Gas Field Cap

23rd June 2015

Groningen gas field cap

Following on from the confirmation that the Groningen gas field production will be capped, Inenco energy analyst Matt Osborne said:

“The production cap on the Groningen gas field to 30 BCM per annum has pushed forward gas contracts higher: July15 NBP contract hit a one month high this morning in reaction to the need to find alternative sources to plug any gaps in UK imports

“Although there is no immediate pressure on gas supplies to the UK and the rest of Europe, it adds to growing concerns that gas supplies could be tighter this winter than in recent years – particularly with the confirmation from the Dutch economy minister that the Netherlands would import more foreign gas from January 2016 as a consequence. The announcement serves as a reminder of the potential fragility and vulnerability of our gas supply to external events and the growing need to find alternative domestic sources such as shale gas extraction currently under consideration.”
